Swinburne Professor honoured with Prime Minister’s Prize for ScienceSwinburne Professor, Matthew Bailes, has been awarded the 2024 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science for his pioneering work in astrophysics, particularly his discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs). The award, presented by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at a ceremony in Parliament House on 8 October 2024, is Australia’s most prestigious scientific award.Professor Bailes, a Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics at Swinburne and Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) based at Swinburne, discovered the first FRB in 2007 along with his team of collaborators. Staff from Swinburne’s International Recruitment and Admissions team were in the front row at the live television broadcast. Following the final, they presented Phu Duc an offer for a full scholarship to study at Swinburne once he completes high school. Additionally, the runners-up were offered partial scholarships.The competition showcases Vietnam’s brightest and best high school students as they demonstrate knowledge in Vietnamese literature, history, science, English and mathematics. It is one of Vietnam’s longest-running television shows. But it was the promise of a practical approach to learning through Swinburne’s Work Integrated Learning program that really caught her eye.Trang’s placement at Medibank taught her a lot about the Australian work culture, from workplace communication to weekly team meetings. The experience gave her a good grasp of how things work in Australia. The position also helped Trang to utilise the communication skills and knowledge from her degree to create meaningful interactions with different groups of people, such as her co-workers, stakeholders, university partners, and students.Throughout her placement, Trang took on different projects, including ones outside of her area of study, which was challenging at first but ultimately a great learning experience.Before commencing her placement, Trang attended Swinburne’s placement workshops, where she received a brief introduction about Australian working culture, tips on what to wear to work and who to talk to if she had any problems while working. She appreciated the support that Swinburne staff provided by always being there when students need them.Her advice to other international students considering Swinburne is to expect a lot of support throughout their academic and professional journey, with many opportunities for Work Integrated Learning.
