Swinburne Professor honoured with Prime Minister’s Prize for ScienceSwinburne Professor, Matthew Bailes, has been awarded the 2024 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science for his pioneering work in astrophysics, particularly his discovery of fast radio bursts (FRBs). The award, presented by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at a ceremony in Parliament House on 8 October 2024, is Australia’s most prestigious scientific award.Professor Bailes, a Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics at Swinburne and Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) based at Swinburne, discovered the first FRB in 2007 along with his team of collaborators. This discovery of FRBs—enigmatic bursts of energy that can emit the same amount of power the Sun generates in a month—represented a monumental shift in our understanding of the universe and has paved the way for new research techniques that are now used by scientists globally.As the Director of OzGrav, Professor Bailes leads a world-class team of researchers exploring FRBs, pulsars and gravitational waves. With advancements in AI and new technologies, Swinburne has identified the need for more up-to-date and relevant courses to meet the evolving demands of the sector.Swinburne’s revamped Master of Finance will integrate cutting-edge technological advancements with core finance principles. The new Master of Professional Accounting will be first to incorporate the transformative elements of AI, FinTech, Blockchain, Cyber Security, and Financial Crime into a standard accredited accounting curriculum. Both courses have been developed in conjunction with industry leaders to reflect the latest industry trends and innovations.In addition, Swinburne is introducing a new minor in FinTech, which is designed to prepare students to navigate and excel in a technology-driven business and accounting landscape.Read the full article.Winner of Vietnam’s Way to Olympia PeakThe final of the Way to Olympia Peak (WTOP) was held on Sunday 13 October 2024 in Vietnam, which was won by Vo Quang Phu Duc. Staff from Swinburne’s International Recruitment and Admissions team were in the front row at the live television broadcast. Following the final, they presented Phu Duc an offer for a full scholarship to study at Swinburne once he completes high school. Additionally, the runners-up were offered partial scholarships.The competition showcases Vietnam’s brightest and best high school students as they demonstrate knowledge in Vietnamese literature, history, science, English and mathematics. It is one of Vietnam’s longest-running television shows. Eligible students will receive 20 percent off their tuition fees for the standard course duration.George Swinburne International Excellence ScholarshipThis scholarship recognises students’ high academic performance and is available to international students commencing an undergraduate or postgraduate course at our Hawthorn campus for the first time in 2025.
