It gives me great pleasure to announce that Macquarie University has performed strongly in the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, with 17 subjects ranked in the top 150 internationally.

The recently released rankings reflect Macquarie's strengths and expertise in a number of academic fields. It positions us as a global leader in higher education, and is testament to our ongoing commitment to excellence in education and research across a wide range of disciplines. 

In other news, the university has launched its latest brand campaign, which includes three new feature stories demonstrating our real-world impact. I encourage you to watch and learn more about our impact through human-powered innovation and collaboration.

Macquarie University has performed strongly in the latest QS 2024 Subject Rankings with 17 subjects ranked in the top 150 internationally. Three subjects were among the global top 50: Philosophy and Linguistics retained positions in the top 50, joined for the first time by Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Macquarie is ranked second in Australia and 31^st in the world for Linguistics, while Philosophy placed fourth nationally and 35^th internationally, and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence was fifth in Australia and 48^th worldwide.

In addition to these high-performing subjects, Macquarie placed in the top 10 in Australia for 19 subjects, up from 17 in 2023. Rounding out the list were Accounting and Finance, Arts and Humanities, Business and Management, Classics and Ancient History, Communication and Media, Computer Science and Information Systems, Engineering – Petroleum, English Language and Literature, Geography, History, Law and Legal Studies, Modern Languages, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Theology and Religious Studies.

In 2024, QS ranked Macquarie 130th globally in its annual World University Rankings.

Increase in student visa refusals for not meeting the health requirement

The Department of Home Affairs has observed an increase in the number of student visa applications being refused for not meeting the health requirement, after not providing evidence of having completed a health examination.

Where a student visa applicant is required to undertake a health examination, a health request letter is auto-generated when the application is lodged, and gives the applicant 28 days to complete their health examination. 

If the applicant has not completed their health examination within the prescribed 28 day period and:

• has not made contact with the Department regarding the health examination; and
• there is no evidence of (or attempts to make) a future health examination booking; and
• there is no evidence of a health examination in progress or pending;

then a decision may be made on the information held. 

The Department is not required to send the applicant a further request for information. This approach supports efficient student visa processing and applies to applications lodged both in Australia and outside
Australia.
