The Faculty of Science and Technology is a community of eight departments engaged in world-leading research that makes a demo
nstrable difference to our eco
nomy and society.
We think that you will find your experience of our research-led teaching, collegiate system, and friendly atmosphere to be rewarding and, as evidenced by our employability statistics and alumni network, a great way to build a platform for a brilliant future career.
Our roots in delivering education in the sciences, mathematics and engineering stem back 50 years to when Lancaster University was first established. Today we have nearly 700 staff and 600 research students, and the breadth and depth of research across our eight departments is extensive. In the 2014 Research Excellence f
ramework, over 80% of our research activity was rated as world-leading and internatio
nally excellent.
We offer a range of degree programmes that are among the highest rated in the UK in terms of the quality of teaching, the quality of the student experience and student career prospects. We aim to be the best at what we do in terms of both research and teaching and, as a result, we are committed to co
ntinual improvement in quality and are co
nstantly reviewing our programmes and content.
As a research-intensive Faculty, our teaching is stro
ngly informed by and co
nnected to our world-leading research. We believe that this deep exposure to the world’s most innovative thinkers and cutting-edge research is crucial to the quality of the educatio
nal experience and your future career prospects. We aim to offer the best learning experience, in the best facilities and spaces, with teaching delivered by our world-class staff, and in a supportive and friendly environment.
We have outstanding, class-leading facilities and invest heavily in the quality of our estate. For example, in recent years we have opened a new Engineering building (which has won a Sustainability Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects); opened a new Chemistry building (part of a £26 million investment in the discipline); built one of the world’s most advanced quantum technology facilities; and extensively refurbished our Physics building. All of our facilities have been designed to provide outstanding support for the best possible research and teaching, and the best learning enviro
nment for our students.
In addition, the Faculty is home to an interdisciplinary research centre — Energy Lancaster — and co
ntributes significantly to three University Institutes — Materials Science, Data Science and Security Lancaster. The Faculty is also a major partner in the Cockcroft Institute for particle physics.
Our focus is on equipping our students to be able to rise to the challenges of the modern world. Our passion is to communicate to our students the knowledge, understanding and skills that place them in the best possible position to make significant co
ntributions to industry and society and to excel in their future careers. We are always delighted to hear from our graduates through our alumni network and to see them grow professio
nally in their careers.
