    Business and Management Personal Statement

I come from a background wher my family has been in the retail trade for the last hundred years. Whist I was growing up I have been actively taking part in the running of the business. My family has given me the opportunity to further myself in achieving my goals. I believe studying at university will give me the opportunity to progress in the understanding I currently have in Business Studies and ICT. I believe that I can combine my interest in Business Studies and Accounts to excel in Business Management

At my secondary school I was handed the privilege and the responsibility of being head prefect. My responsibilities included attending meetings with the school principal and school staff. I believe these installed essential characteristics such as leadership

I was also the school football captain and represented the school at many inter-schools sports activities. Furthermore I represented the Wildlife Conservation Society of Zambia, which is a charitable organisationfor the protection of wildlife in Zambian Game Parks. Part of my duties included giving talks to other students concerning conservation and wildlife. I thoroughly enjoyed this particular segment of my work because conservation is an issue close to my heart

I am presently enrolled at Redbridge College in Romford wher I am studying three A2 courses in Mathematics, ICT and Business Studies, and one AS-Level in Accounts. I do take part in several sports activities not only to remain in good physical shape but also meet new people. I did not achieve all my targets but I am confident that with extra effort and help from my tutors I will push past my predicted grades. I have drawn up a plan of what needs to be done over the next few months in achieving this. Over the last year I have developed at a personnel level. I understand that the onus is on me to push myself to achieve my ambitions

Outside of college I have a passion for sports both for enjoyment purposes and maintaining fitness. Football is at the centre of my love for sport, but I also enjoy and participate in other sporting activities such as cricket, squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis and long distance running. I am hoping to carry on these activities whilst conducting my studies at university. I believe sports play an important role in providing a balance between education and physical wellbeing

It has long been my ambition to complete my studies at a British university. As it is well established Britain has the finest reputation for higher education around the world. A degree from a British university will assist me in my future career. I am very much looking forward to educational challenges that university has in store for me. I am also looking forward to meeting the different cultures and backgrounds that will exist of any university. But most importantly I believe I have the prerequisites not only to achieve a good degree but to progress at a personal level. This would act as a foundation for any future success in the business world.

    Maths and computing personal statement

The study of mathematical sciences has intrigued me for many years. The decision to study A levels in both Maths and Physics stemmed from a high interest level and strong aptitude in both subject areas. This was reflected in the AS grades I received in June 2002; achieving an A grade in mathematics which has inspired me further in my pursuit of the subject.

My interest has spread to computers and trying to link the two together has played a big part of my life in the last few years. I have taught myself, using books and other available sources, how to program in HTML and this has made it possible for me to take an active role in web design.

My other academic interests include Business Studies, especially management and finance areas which link with sections of the maths course. My choice to include a humanities subject at A level was partly encouraged by my need to analyse and evaluate situations, Business Studies gives me the chance to do this in great detail and I find it therapeutic to get involved in relevant

case studies. I am also taking an A level in General Studies which is increasing my knowledge of political and cultural issues. The subject also encourages group discussions concerning current affairs and provides me with the opportunity to input my opinions.

For the last few years I have been a member of a Duke of Edinburgh scheme running locally within the college. In June 2001 I completed the Bronze Award and am now working towards my Gold. This has given me a lot of experience in teamwork, problem solving and maintaining a high level of responsibility. These qualities have been taken on into a successful work experience placement in year 10 and my part time job as a sales/management assistant at respectable retail outlet Marks and Spencer.

I have enjoyed my time in the Sixth Form and have taken pleasure from both the academic and extra-curricular activities. I feel that I possess the qualities required to continue maths on to a higher level and combine it with modules that both interest me now and in areas which I hope to build on whilst at university. I am confident that this enthusiasm will combine with my strong determination and motivation, enabling me to succeed in the challenges that university presents.

    Biology personal statement

Studying at a university has always been very attractive to me. Not only because it will help me to become independent, but also because it will enable me to study as much as I want. I particularly look forward to studying at a university in the United Kingdom because I feel it would give me a real challenge, an adventure to remember and an opportunity to broaden my horizons beyond the Netherlands. It would also help me to improve my English in a way that I wouldn&apost be able to do if I were to stay in the Netherlands.

After having visited several open days for universities in the United Kingdom, I am even more determined to study there. Having decided that I want to spend my years as a student in the United Kingdom, I had to pick one course out of many interesting studies, so I have chosen Biology. Biology is an obvious choice for me because I am very interested in life in general, especially in the environment. In school I take Biology as part of my profile and I like the modules Genetics, Ecology and Evolution the best. I believe the three of them play a huge role in trying to understand nature&aposs many mysteries.

My biology teacher emphasizes fieldwork, and I particularly enjoyed working on a Winogradsky Column, which is a micro-ecosystem, because it helped me to apply my biological knowledge in a practical way. Also, together with two other students, I am working on a paper on Aphasia. For our project we had the chance to test an actual aphasia-patient in a revalidation center, using PALPA test 51. Then we compared his results to the results of non-aphasic people. I liked this assignment very much because we had to carry out a lot of research. It helped me to develop research skills, as well as communications skills.

I like to solve puzzles and see biology as a way to investigate problems and generate solutions, hence my interests in applying my study to a future career as a forensic scientist or environmental scientist. Being a forensic scientist looks very exciting to me, using biological techniques to fight crimes, and to present evidence in court to bring the victims justice. Though being influenced by a few television series, a career in the forensic field has always been appealing to me. Justice is just one of the things that I am very passionate about.

The second option was not on my mind until I followed biology classes in school. I suddenly realized that I truly enjoyed the chapters about the environment, and that I certainly would not mind learning a whole lot more about it. Studying biology will enable me to carry out research in that field and to share my knowledge with others. Working in a laboratory with other scientists is a very attractive idea to me. I would like to work towards solutions for existing problems, or even better, to find new questions yet to be answered.

I have also participated in other school projects and leadership programs. One of those projects was the European Youth Parliament. That was very useful for my debating skills, and it really made me think about the problems we have in our society today. Besides thinking about problems on a more global level, I have spent time being a part of the Student Board. That gave me a chance to defend the needs of the students, and to have influence on decisions made about us.

Outside school I like to learn new things as well. Since the age of five I have been an avid reader, and I will read any thing from the classics till modern fantasy, as long as it has got words in it. I believe that caused me to be a fast reader, which leads to better information gathering. I read books in both English and Dutch, and I believe that one should try to read a book in it’s original language. One of my other interests is computers. I have gained experience with Linux and programming languages, as well as useful contacts from all over the world thanks to the computer.

I hope that this statement shows that I am a motivated student and that I will be dedicated to my course.
